Albania, 1996–1998
After the collapse of the communist regime, Argyris Dinopoulos returned to Albania more than once in the closing years of the twentieth century. In 1996 he took his camera inside the Burrel prison — a place of torment — recording the testimony of those who had survived the Hoxha regime. Two years later, in 1998, he went back for Antenna (ANT1) to the turmoil of southern Albania — to Vlorë and Sarandë — where the collapse of the state, following the 1997 crisis, had left armed uprisings in its wake. The dossier opens with the documentary on Hoxha's prisons and runs through to the 1998 reports from the southern turmoil, alongside the photographic archive.
Hoxha's Prisons
In the first years after the fall of the Enver Hoxha – Ramiz Alia regime, the camera goes inside the Burrel prison. The documentary records not only the prison's spaces but the testimony of detainees who survived; through their accounts and the now-empty cells, it reconstructs the daily life of confinement. It also presents rare archival photographs and film from the Hoxha and Alia era.
