In September 2001, just weeks after the September 11 attacks, Argyris Dinopoulos reached northern Afghanistan as a correspondent for Antenna (ANT1). He spent almost two months in the Afghan desert, into November, following the Northern Alliance and covering at first hand the start of the American military operation against the Taliban. The dossier brings together the central documentary of the assignment, the longer personal documentary on the life of the news team at the front, and the individual war reports, alongside the photographs from the desert.
"Afghanistan" distils the assignment into a documentary of the war as Dinopoulos lived it from the side of the Northern Alliance: the hard fighting in the desert, the landscape of a front far from the lights of the major networks, and the traces of earlier wars still scattered across the country.
Among them, the remnants of the Soviet invasion and the almost nine-year war that followed (1979–1989) still stood out. It forms the core of Dinopoulos's Afghan archive — around it, the reports of the assignment.
