1994 · Three photographs from Australia — in the burnt forest, outside a house, and in the street.
In January 1994 Argyris Dinopoulos travelled to Australia from Mexico (where he had covered the "Zapatista" uprising for SKAI television) to report, and to bring back to Greece, the great destruction wrought on the "New Continent" by the bushfires.
The Australian bushfires of 1994 had drawn the attention of world opinion, since they were taken to be the first signs of what climate change would do to forests — climate change having only just begun to occupy, after the scientific community, the international media as well.
The dispatches of Argyris Dinopoulos – like those of dozens of other correspondents from all over the world who had gone to Australia – brought forward the question of protecting forests effectively from the effects of climate change, and also the enormous contribution of volunteering (in which the Australians were pioneers) to the battle to put the fires out.
